Moxibustion at home

This information is solely for patients who have had treatments with me and have been given clear instructions by me on how to apply moxibustion, or moxa, at home. Please do not use if you have not received any direct instructions from me.

There are many ways to perform moxa on yourself. For practical reasons I advise my patients of two ways - with a smokeless moxa stick or tiger warmer.

For both methods please make sure that you open a window to ensure adequate circulation of air.

Smokeless Moxa stick

 You will need
       - one smokeles moxa stick
       - a bowl filled with sand or rice to extinguish the moxa
       - a candle or lighter to light the moxa stick

How to light the moxa stick
       - light the candle and slowly rotate the tip of the stick over the flame until it starts to light
       - there will be more like an ember glow to the stick; can take up to 5 minutes to light it properly

How to use moxa stick
- hold the moxa stick about 2-3 cm above the points that were shown to you during your treatment with me
- hold over the point for a 5-10 seconds until the point gets warm; remove the moxa and gently press or massage the point to push the heat into the point
- repeat the process for about 5 minutes on each point

When you have finished please extinguish the moxa properly by placing it in a bowl of rice or sand and leave it there to cool off.

You can then re-use the moxa again at the next session!

Tiger warmer kit

The kit contains a metal device called a Tiger warmer and some moxa incense sticks. You may get about 6-12 months of treatment out of this kit, depending on frequency of use. The tougher outer plastic box enables you to can carry them with you on your travels without damaging the moxa sticks.

Please only apply the moxa to points that I have instructed you to use.
